Since it was first struck by the Royal Canadian Mint in 1988, the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf has achieved great popularity. Trusted for its purity (it was the first silver coin ever to achieve a purity level of .9999 fine) and admired for its design. The coin generally always features a maple leaf but annual variations for the coin in past have included proof releases (1989 only), privy marks, a coloured maple leaf (with a design different from the regular maple leaf), holographic enhancements and several differing designs, such as a 2009 issue commemorating the 2010 Winter Olympics. The American Silver Eagle, an official bullion coin of the United States was first released by the U.S. Mint in 1986 depicts a design inspired by the classic “Walking Liberty” design, which was originally used on US half-dollar coins from the year 1916 to 1947. The opposite side features a heraldic eagle. In addition to the bullion version, the United States Mint has produced a proof version and an uncirculated version for coin collectors.
